8 Step Practical Guide To Kick Start Your Weight Loss Journey
I followed the two classic mantras that are usually associated with a standard weight loss program: (a) Healthy diet and (b) Exercise. These are the two most obvious ways to shed those extra kilos off your body! But how many of you, trying to cut down on the excess flab, have actually achieved the desired results? Not many, if I were to assume. Most of us tend to forget the first rule of weight loss – DISCIPLINE. In fact, losing weight is more of a mental challenge than a physical one. Once you have taken control of your mind, a fitness regime will consequentially follow.
‘Getting started’ is the foremost roadblock that you will have to crack down in your weight loss path. Here are a few tips to kick start your battle with the piled up kilos.
1- Commit Yourself To Lose Weight
A moderate change in the diet and 10 – 15 minutes of walking is what defined my fitness schedule earlier. But a haywire menstruation cycle and doctor’s warning was enough to set alarm bells ringing for me and commit myself whole heartedly to curb my weight. My advice to you: Don’t wait for a trigger. If you’re really going to stay motivated, the first thing you need to do is determine what actually motivates you. You can try making it more fun and realistic by getting your friends involved.
2- Seek A Professional Help
I started with my weight loss regime based on what I thought was right for me. It took me 3 months to lose 3 kilos but without any positive effect on my menstrual health. That’s when I decided to enroll myself for a professional weight loss program instead of charting my own course. A professional program will be based on your body current mass index (BMI), previous and existing illnesses, overall health, professional and personal lifestyle and food habits. They may also run other health checks if required, don’t shy away from that either. Never follow any random exercise and diet suggestions. What works for one person may not work for another one.
3- Find Out A Regime That Suits You
Zero down on a regime that is realistic and sustainable for the whole life. Talk to people who have successfully lost their weight. For me, it was a recommendation from a friend who had shown visible results after enrolling with a popular slimming institute.
A gym, slimming institute or personal dietician – whatever you choose should fit into your regular lifestyle. Weigh down the pros and cons of every weight loss method with respect to your inputs required in terms time, money and feasibility.
4- Follow The Regime Strictly
Simply registering yourself for a weight loss program isn’t enough. You have to religiously follow the guidelines laid down by your fitness instructor. I had enrolled for a ‘5 Kg weight loss in 1 month’ program which required me to follow a healthy diet along with active and passive exercises. While I was able to do full justice to the program, another fellow member couldn’t even shed 2 kilos with the same program. A strict discipline fueled by a strong desire to lose weight is must. 3 plus 5, I had already lost 8 kilos by this time.
5- Eat Healthy, Don’t Starve Yourself
People would often ask me if I was ‘dieting’ or ‘fasting’. No, I didn’t do either. Rather, I focused on including low calorie and healthy food options in my daily menu as suggested by my weight loss instructor. Junk and fatty foods may tempt you for a while, but you can stay away from them with your will power. You will be amazed that after sometime, your body would on its own stop craving for bad foods.
6- Sweat It Out
A minimum of 40 to 45 minutes of physical exercise 5 to 6 days a week is must to get rid of surplus calories and tone your body parts. You can take your pick from brisk walking, jogging, yoga, cycling or any other active exercise that sets your heart beats pacing in faster motion. But don’t stress yourself out to lose weight faster. Adequate rest and sleep is equally important for your body.
7- Don’t Stop, Continue Your Regime
Most of the people tend to leave their weight loss program midway or later after losing the desired weight. Consequently, they regain the lost weight very quickly. It is of the utmost importance that you continue with your regime for the lifetime. I stopped going to the slimming institute after a month, but I continued and still continuing with their weight loss recommendations. The result was further 5 kg loss. So that now makes 3 + 5 + 5 = 13 kilos down my body and I am still counting backwards.
8- Self Motivation Is The Key
There may be periods when you feel low or far from your goal. Be patient and don’t just give up yet. You must remember that it’s you who has to bust your butt no matter whatever program you may choose. Once the compliments on your new look start flowing in, it will cheer you up for sure.
