I badly want Aligarh movie to do well at the box office. I watched the movie and I consider myself lucky that I was able to watch the movie before its Indian release. Aligarh is not just a movie. It made me think a lot about a “Taboo” matter in Indian society. Gay or Lesbians are living with us but they have no place in Indian society.
Those involved in homosexual activity do not go for an arranged marriage in India as we treats them as criminals. Aligarh movie made me realize that nothing really changed as far as Indian middle-class people’s mindset is concerned. It is still as it was in the Stone Age. The story of Aligarh touched me. It really left me thoughtful.
Siras, a highly educated professor lives in his own world. There is no complexity in his world. He teaches Marathi in a Muslim institute. The simple man takes pride in thinking that he is the only man in his college who can teach Marathi. His students love him too. But one day everything changes.
Aligarh University fires him on the basis of being Gay. They have evidence. Yes, someone actually gave them a video that shows the professor making out with a man. This is the basic premise of the story.
Hansal Mehta wanted the focus to be on the secret gay culture in India. He also wanted to show how some men act gay as the rich gay people will pay them to have sex with them. Mothers are terrified of Gay guys. Other couples can get out of the house at daytime. Buy gay couples only allowed to roam on the street when everyone is asleep. Mehta was not in the mood of hiding anything. If you are one of those people who still like to live in denial about homosexuality then this movie will make you very uncomfortable.
Siras dies at the end. He could not take it anymore. If you are a homosexual man living in India then you know that all the things that happened to Siras in the film are a reality in India. Hansal Mehta told the truth. But Mehta could not have been successful with his story if he did not cast Manoj Bajpai. Manoj almost vanished from the Bollywood scene. This movie is his comeback venture. His job was to play a role that no other Bollywood actors played so far. Manoj is brave enough to accept the role of a 64-year-old gay professor.
Manoj Bajpai played the role with his heart. The way he looks at everything will haunt you; Manoj was able to convey the fear of an Indian homosexual man. This is his movie. Aligarh is a must watch movie because of Manoj Bajpai. Hansal Mehta as the director made the best film of his career.
Aligarh will make you confuse, will make you ask yourself questions, you will be disturbed, yes this will not be another Hindi movie that you watched just to have fun. You need to have the courage to watch this movie. You need to say yourself that Homosexuality is real.
